Three ways to Boost your Positivity
1) Give thanks once a day--saying what you are thankful for out loud makes it more likely you'll feel it, too!
2) Take a day off from social media--we humans thrive on face-to-face communication.
3) Get real about your goals and expectations--make them a stretch but realistic. Setting your sights on what's unattainable can lead to disappointment in the long run.
As an athlete you know that your body needs to perform well on demand and in repetitive motion. But, the very movements you do over and over again to attain mastery in your sport create muscle imbalances throughout your body. Down the road this can lead to injury from poor biomechanics and greatly decreased range of motion and flexibility. How your body looks doesn’t always tell the whole story.
Why should athletes consider Pilates and bodywork?
Can you tell by looking at someone’s body what their sport is? Runners and cyclists often have impressive quads. Climbers may have huge forearms. However, developing the muscles that you can’t see like the rotator cuff and transverse abdominis blasts athletes into the next level of success. Developing joint balance and stability brings back the integration of your entire body in balance and structure. Strengthening and lengthening the muscles that support the spine keep your back free from injury and pain and give you tons more power.
Pilates and bodywork go hand-in-hand in increasing core strength, power, flexibility, balance, and focus. At any age practicing Pilates helps athletes feel stronger and healthier and perform better than ever. Bodywork goes naturally with Pilates in that these techniques can lengthen, relax, and retrain poorly working muscles to perform better and in the correct hierarchy.
How do the movements of Pilates and Active Isolated Stretching achieve core strength?
Pilates movements like the Hundred, Ab Series, and the pelvic tilt strengthen the core, and this gives your body the ability to move well with increased power. Strong core muscles give you hitting and throwing power and super speed. Active Isolated Stretching lengthens your muscles to their correct resting and active tension so that they are ready to perform their best when you want them to.
The flexibility that you gain from practicing Pilates means you can move freely and with ease. The fluidity of movement that you find with Pilates directly results in correct muscle recruitment and with the exact right amount of effort so you are never wasting energy on compensatory movement patterns. Myofascial Release and AIS also aid flexibility by stretching the superficial fascia and balancing muscles especially around joints.
Balance is an important component of any athlete’s performance.
Core strength gives your body stability and the awareness of where you are in space in any body position. You can move quicker and faster with great balance. Traditional Swedish massage techniques bring relaxation to your mind and nervous system and increased proprioception capacity.
Two more aspects of Pilates practice that can make a world of difference for athletes are the improved use of breath in coordination with movement and increased mental focus. Purposeful breathing increases breath capacity and the efficiency of your diaphragm, which increases lung capacity and endurance. Training your mind to really concentrate on details of form and movement and breath effectively improves mind/body awareness, which is a fantastic benefit for any athlete.
Pilates and bodywork together can improve any athlete’s performance at any stage of life. Taking the first step toward working with a talented Pilates teacher and massage and bodywork therapist could be the first step toward your ultimate win.
